Implant Operation Recovery: Osseointegration Period

Implant Operation Recovery: Osseointegration Period
8 June 2023 Admin Admin

Implant operation recovery requires time and attention. The recovery process begins right after you complete the first stage of your treatment. In the following period aftercare is essential. Depending on what your implant operation is including the healing time can differ between 3 to 6 months. If you are having bone grafting and/or sinus lifting as an addition to dental implants, the waiting period after the implant operation is longer.

Even though the implant is in, it still needs to fuse with your jawbone. Your gums also need to heal. This process takes time and it is known as the Osseointegration period. During this time, aftercare following the implant operation and good oral hygiene are indispensable. This is because the fusion process is somehow exposed then the implant can fail.

Here are a couple of things you need to follow after implant operations;

  • AVOID PRESSURE: You should avoid any unnecessary pressure on the operation area. Especially during the following first month of the operation. Too much pressure can harm the placement of the implants and cause them to fail.
  • GOOD ORAL HYGIENE ROUTINE: Unless you had a full extraction, you should keep brushing your teeth regularly from gum to teeth in a single motion. Do not forget to floss and use mouthwash on a routine basis. You can also use salted water as an alternative for mouthwash.
  • TEMPORARY PROTHESIS USAGE: This one is depending on your case. Not all implant patients need a temporary prosthesis but if you are having one then you need to take good care of it as well. First of all, we are not advising you to use it for the first couple of weeks since it can create unwanted pressure on the implants. Once you start using the prosthesis you need to keep it clean. You must brush all parts of it and leave it in water overnight. Try to avoid using it too often, especially while you are eating.
  • STITCHES: In our clinic, we use dissolvable stitches. Their material will resolve in time so do not worry about removing your stitches.

In the end;

If you follow these points, you would severely decrease the chance of complications. When the healing period is complete, you can come back to receive your implant crown or a fixed prosthesis. At this point, you will have the smile you are longing for. This also means that you still need to protect & maintain that smile.
